![]() Planting Beet Seeds in the Gardenĭid you know…a single beet “seed” is actually a cluster of two to six seeds together? ![]() You need to do a soil test to see if it is needed. This is an article that talks about boron, borax and how it affects beets. I’ve honestly never done anything with boron but I found it interesting. I found this information in researching growing beets tips. Lack of boron could cause dark spots in your harvest. Balance in all things.īeets especially need a mineral called “boron” to develop healthy roots. Lots of nitrogen will get you lots of greens but then the energy doesn’t go to the root. Just don’t provide too much nitrogen if you want large beetroots. Thus allowing the beets to grow a little longer even if the air is cold.īeets are heavy feeders that just means they will pull a lot of nutrients from the soil as they grow. I’d never really heard that before, but it does make sense, since heavier soil would trap the heat as the temperatures drop in the fall. Side note: When we researched one extension mentioned that sandy soil is better for spring beet crops, while heavier soil is better for fall beet crops. Soil that is high in organic matter is less likely to cause problems. While your beets are germinating, do NOT allow the soil to form a crust of any kind-that’s particularly hard on root crops like beets that have to push through the dirt. Beets have long tap roots that like to go deep in the soil. (The organic matter is what makes the soil dark and fluffy.) They do well in raised beds as the soil is usually deep and loose.īefore planting, remove any obstacles like roots, rocks, and clods of unbroken dirt from the soil before planting, as these can interfere with proper beetroot development. Like many garden crops, beets prefer deep, well-worked dirt that’s high in organic matter. Even if it is a few weeks before your last freeze date. Basically get them in the ground when you can work the soil. And fun because they are early crops! I love things that I can plant early in the spring. Seeds should be planted in the cooler months of the year, in soil that has warmed slightly. Since I just moved to Tennessee from Colorado, I’ll probably try some different varieties in the future, if I find my favorite varieties from Colorado don’t grow as well here. The instructions on this page will work for basically any color and shape you’d like to grow. Who knows maybe someday I’ll get more adventurous. Haha we are pretty traditional in our eating. ![]() purple potatoes!?! It just doesn’t seem right. Red stripes would be fine but yellow beets? Kind of like purple potatoes…. I’m not convinced that the various colors available in some beet varieties will be appealing to my family. (I have no idea how to pronounce it!) But they are deep red so they work! They are apparently an ancient heirloom variety so I’m hoping they will be delicious. The name Beet Crapaudine kind of made me laugh. This year I’m adding a longer cylindrical-shaped beet to my garden. Detroit Beets are what I’ve planted in the past. We have our standby favorite, and a new to me heirloom variety. Well, I usually stick with traditional rounded deep red varieties. Most beets I’ve seen are round, but some are more elongated or cylindrical in shape instead. ![]() There are actually several other types of beets, however, including pink beets, yellow or golden beets, white beets, and even striped beets (also known as Chioggia beets). Most people think of beets as being round and deep red-like the beets you’ll most commonly see at grocery stores and some farmer’s markets.

Greater ambiguity lies with the understanding of the terms ‘means or methods of warfare’. These definitions most commonly encompass all those objects that are intended to directly cause harm to persons or damage to objects. States’ national definitions include a broad range of weapons-from traditional weapons, such as firearms, to munitions, missiles, non- or less-lethal weapons, and delivery systems. For example, in 2017, the Netherlands and Switzerland stated that ‘what else should fall under the category of means apart from, of course, weapons (…), that is what needs to be reviewed, is up for debate’.Īrguably, the term ‘weapons’ has been the easiest of the three terms to define. Drafters of the Protocol intentionally left the scope open to be sufficiently inclusive of a wide variety of military items, and to prevent States from evading or circumventing this prohibition by developing or defining new war-waging tools with distinct capabilities.Īt the same time, this choice may have created some inconsistency in the Protocol’s application and lack of clarity in regards to which items shall be reviewed. There is no common definition of these terms nor does another provision or the preamble of the Protocol provide context to clarify their meaning. ![]() The AP1 itself does not define the key terms: ‘a new weapon, means or method of warfare’. Terminology of weapons under pressure: fleshing out the scope of Article 36 review We need not a review of weapons, but a review of ‘technologies of warfare’, as the ICRC also calls them, a term that is adaptive to the modern battlefield, inclusive of both current and future military developments, and highlights a broad scope of review in the spirit of Article 36’s rationale. We need to move on from describing Article 36 as strictly requiring a weapons review and acknowledge that the choice of non-weaponized technologies may influence militaries’ offensive and defensive capabilities just as much as the choice of weapons. In the words of Mary Ellen O’Connell: ‘we need a radical shift about how we think of weapons!’ We need a shift to consider technologies that may be far removed from the battlefield, are not weaponized in the traditional sense, and nevertheless, significantly contribute to the conduct of hostilities. So let’s take a step back and unpack a question that is often glossed over and assumed by international legal scholars and State experts: what specifically are the ‘weapons, means or methods of warfare’ about which these regular debates are held? This narrative, however, is overly simplistic. ![]() There is a prevailing tendency among States and scholars to call it the ‘weapons review’, as if non-weaponized items were excluded. ![]() To answer this question, I point to and examine a key provision in international humanitarian law that reflects the limited freedom of States to select means or methods of warfare: Additional Protocol I (API) Article 36, which obliges State Parties to ensure that the question of the legality of ‘a new weapon, means or methods of warfare’ is reviewed with care during development or acquisition and before use and deployment. Non-weaponized AI technologies, such as decision aids or military human enhancement technologies, are frequently overlooked and lack a suitable forum.īut is this weapons-focused approach justified from a legal perspective? Despite the lack of a shared definition, LAWS are most commonly referred to as weapon systems that can select and attack targets without human intervention, a focus on weaponization that is even tautologically emphasized by the inclusion of ‘lethal’ in the name of the technology in question. However, despite the multitude of different AI applications, international fora – for example, the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons (CCW) Group of Governmental Experts (GGE) on Lethal Autonomous Weapons Systems (LAWS) – focus exclusively on AI applications to weaponized systems. ![]() The emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies and their use in conflicts is a topic of rising importance in international debates. Shifting the narrative: not weapons, but technologies of warfare. Step 6: Within 30 seconds of releasing the LEARN button, rush to the keypad outside your garage door, press the new passcode, and then press 0 three times. Press the LEARN button and observe the opener blinks. You must slide the mortar casing to access the button. Suppose you have a ceiling mount or wall mount opener, set up a ladder to reach the button. Step 5: Locate the “LEARN” button on your garage door opener, always near the opener’s antennae. Once you have entered the opener type number, press the # pound button. If unsure, check the backside of your device to determine your opener type’s number. Step 4: Press your garage door opener type (1-9). ![]() Step 3: Enter the new 4-digit passcode followed by the # pound button. Observe the red light blinks a couple of times until it stops to indicate reset. Step 2: Simultaneously press the * and # pound buttons to reset the password. ![]() Step 1: Locate the internal switches within the garage door opener remote control by removing its cover. Once you enter the number, you can switch the system back to ‘operate’ mode before putting it back to work.Īnyways, here is a step-by-step procedure for completing the reset task. If you have a LiftMaster garage door opener, the process requires switching from an operating mode to program mode first, followed by your preferred new 4-digit pin. Resetting your garage door keypad without the enter button is fast and straightforward. How to Reset Garage Door Keypad Without Enter Button If any of these events happen, you will have to do a quick reset to erase the previous password and create a new one for accessing your garage. However, you can forget the numeric passcode, or the entry code can stop working for some reason. Once you enter the correct passcode on the keypad, it triggers the opener to open your garage door. It typically has numeric keys from 0 to 9 and additional buttons with unique functions or features. The keypad connects to the garage door opener setup mounted inside the garage. It sits right outside the garage door, either on the right or left panel of the entrance. Most of the keypads from different brands are pretty similar in design, so you should have no trouble applying the knowledge you acquire here across various keypad models and brands.Īs the name suggests, a garage door opener keypad is a device that allows you to enter a personal code to open or close your garage door. All you need is to follow a quick and straightforward process correctly, starting with entering the gadget’s operating mode. Yes, it is possible to reprogram a garage door keypad without using the enter button, or more specifically, when the enter button is missing. ![]()

It is the psychedelic space inside the head and our own oscillation between the “the inner and outer worlds that we inhabit” (Brüggemeier 2013) that can be considered as extremophile. 11), the role of media technology has been instrumental in exploring and gaining direct experience of the range of inaccessible places previously described. Given that sound represents only a small biologically mediated fraction of all physical vibrations of the “vibrating world” (Sterne 2003, p. It does this through discussing sonic and radio related media practices, beginning with the early 20th Century radio amateur movement, interspecies communication research and the work of tactical media artists including Natalie Jeremijenko and Marko Peljhan. Chapter 3 traverses the vast distance of sound and radio waves from the extreme environment of outer space to the depths of the oceans and cross species boundaries. This forms Rancièrian tactical “communities of sense”, with the potential to transform into a tool for a politics that does not yet exist. ![]() The wider quest for a poetics of responsibility, as with the tactical employment of “new sensitivities,” becomes a political act. Here, both artistic practice and creative research help to locate the situated awareness of these “new sensitivities”, in a context that is experiential and publicly accessible, while simultaneously renegotiating the defining boundaries of such a context. In Chapter 3 I also explore media arts practice that draws its surrounding as a dynamic and evolving environment, which is something in which to actively engage with and intervene. Such an awareness is created through the artistic and tactical employment of the “new sensitivities” (Latour 2013). By doing this, I aim to support my argument for the vital contribution that a situated awareness offers to the discussion of a poetics of responsibility from a media arts perspective. I analyse these examples according to the sense of situated awareness that they create. I am interested here in media arts practices that combine technology and sensory perception, in order to extend, refine or simply shift human sensory perception. This discussion includes the audio/video installation My City is a Hungry Ghost, the video project Nature in the Dark, and the sound installation planet ocean.
